DEX Haus

Atlanta, GA DEXhaus is a full remodel design build project completed by the DEX team of a home built in California Contemporary architectural style, and redesigned with a modern twist. With older homes on large lots in the Vinings area being destined as tear downs and replaced by a large traditionals (Mcmansions)  we could not let it happen to this gem. The original owner taught civil engineering at Georgia Tech and had his students help him build it, so he was delighted to hear we were going to renovate! Designed as a passive solar facing due south and built into the hillside, there was great potential but also challenges. We excavated and dug it out of the hill to create a better outdoor living space in the back, and added commercial mullions and windows to the front to take advantage of the southern exposure which provides so much heat on sunny winter days that not additional heat is needed until evening. We also saved most of the original cedar siding by sanding off the heavy coating of stain and restoring the original cedar finish. “DEXhaus is somewhat our study in the use of designer concrete in a residential setting and is used it throughout the house.”
