The flagship retail project by Brown Jordan, designed by Touzet Studio, draws inspiration from the Dade County pine forest and coral-rock bluffs that once covered the site, of which less than 2% remains today. The building’s design features volumes that seem to emerge from the southern edge of the site that is filled with greenery and natural landscape elements. The first level is covered in Florida keystone, the same material as the limestone from the coastal coral bluffs. The taller, alternating plates are covered in perforated high performance concrete panels. The designers worked with DEX to create a repeating pattern to reduce the number of forms required, enhancing cost efficiency. The patterns were cut using CNC tooling from digital files provided by Touzet Studio, ensuring precision and accuracy. Rubber forms were then cast from these patterns and used for the project.
A perforated rainscreen system on the front elevation of the store filters light into the interior showroom. This creates a soft glow reminiscent of the original pine forest environment. The perforated panel design extends upward and over, creating a canopy on the rooftop, from which views of Downtown Miami, the Design District, and Biscayne Bay are visible. This distinctive design, visible from I-195, showcases Brown Jordan’s dedication to quality and innovation. The high performance concrete panels are thinner and lighter, reducing material usage and carbon emissions while maintaining exceptional strength and durability, making them ideal for the Florida climate susceptible to extreme weather events. Completed in 2016, this structure is designed for longevity, ensuring it remains a resilient and sustainable feature of the Design District and landscape for years to come.
